Celeste Rojas Mugica (chilena/argentina) es artista visual, fotógrafa y cineasta, Máster en Creación Cinematográfica de la Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (País Vasco).&#38;nbsp;
Investiga sobre las nociones y relaciones entre memoria, violencia e imaginación. Trabaja —particularmente en relación al territorio comprendido por el Estado chileno—con las imágenes y los archivos como materia de experimentación, en torno a sus usos y su potencia política, situando su práctica en los bordes entre la ficción y el documento.

Ha exhibido y publicado su obra en América, Europa y Asia y ha recibido los Fondos Hubert Bals Fund-IFFR (NL); Ars Electronica Chilean Artist Call (AU); FONDART (CL); Fondo Audiovisual (CL); INCAA (AR); BECAR Cultura (AR); Fondo Nacional de las Artes (AR), el Deutsch Art Council Fund (IT); entre otros. Su obra ha sido reconocida con los Premios Nacional de Fotografía Joven (CL, 2017); Premio Bienal Arte Joven de Buenos Aires (AR, 2017) y Premio a la Creación Latinoamericana de la Bienal de Imagen en Movimiento (AR, 2018), entre otros.&#38;nbsp; 

Recientemente ha exhibido su obra y películas en festivales y espacios tales como VIENNALE (AU), FIDMarseille (FR), DocLisboa (PT), Ars Electronica (AU), Les Rencontres d’ Arles (FR), Anthology Film Archives (US), RIDM (CA), FICUNAM (MX), ZINEBI (ES), L’Alternativa (ES),  FICValdivia (CL), la Bienal de Imagen en Movimiento (ARG), el Festival de Cine de San Sebastián (ES) y BIENALSUR, entre otros.

Su primer largometraje, Una sombra oscilante, se estrenó en FIDMarseille (FR, 2024), recibiendo la Mención Especial del Jurado. La película ha sido reconocida también con el Premio ZIFF a la Mejor Película del First Film Competition en ZINEBI (ES), el Premio a Mejor Película Chilena en FICValdivia y en FIDOCS (CL), el Premio a Mejor Dirección en FICCALI (CO), el Premio al Mejor Documental en el Hainan IFF (CHN) y el Premio DOCMA a la Mejor Película Internacional Documental en L’Alternativa (ES).

En 2025 funda la casa productora&#38;nbsp;Volátil, junto a José Jiménez, un proyecto&#38;nbsp;convocado por el cine, las artes visuales, la investigación de campo y los archivos.&#38;nbsp; 


Celeste Rojas Mugica (Chilean/Argentinian) is a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker with a Master’s Degree in Film Creation from the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (Basque Country). Her work examines the relationships between memory, violence, and imagination. Focusing particularly on the territory shaped by the Chilean State, she engages with images and archives as experimental mediums, reflecting on their political potency and social uses, at the intersection of fiction and documentary. 

She has exhibited and published her work across America, Europe, and Asia and has been supported by the Hubert Bals Fund (NL), the Ars Electronica Chilean Artist Fund (AU), FONDART (CL), the Audiovisual Fund (CL), INCAA (AR), among others. Her artistic work has been recognized with the National Young Photography Prize (CL, 2017), the Buenos Aires Young Art Biennial Prize (AR, 2017), and the Latin American Creation Prize at the Biennial of Image in Movement (AR, 2018), among others. 

Her films have recently been premiered at festivals and venues such as VIENNALE (AU), FIDMarseille (FR), DocLisboa (PT), Ars Electronica (AU), Les Rencontres d’Arles (FR),Anthology Film ARchives (US), RIDM (CA), FICUNAM (MX), ZINEBI (ES), L’Alternativa (ES), FICValdivia (CL), Ji.hlava (CZ), San Sebastian Film Festival (ES), and BIENALSUR, among others. 

Her debut feature film, Una sombra oscilante (An Oscillating Shadow), premiered at FIDMarseille (FR, 2024) where it received the Jury Special Mention. The film also won the Grand Award ZIFF in the First Film Competition at ZINEBI (ES), the Best Chilean Film Award at FICValdivia and FIDOCS (CL), the Best Documentary Film at the Hainan IFF (CHN), The Best Director Award at FICCALI (CO), and the DOCMA for Best International Documentary Film at L’Alternativa (ES).
In 2025, she and José Jiménez launched the Production Company&#38;nbsp;Volátil, a project born from their shared interest in cinema, visual arts, field research, and archive.

Él revela e imagina un mundo en el interior de un cuarto oscuro. Su hija hace de eso un juego: sobre imágenes latentes, posibles, inventadas; sobre las formas de resistir y transitar la oscuridad. UNA SOMBRA OSCILANTE explora el peso íntimo y político de las imágenes para abrir un espacio donde pensarlas como acto de resistencia, ya sea porque se hacen pese al horror, o porque existen para ofrecer un punto de fuga imaginario que quizás nos libre de este.

He develops and imagines a world inside a dark room. His daughter weaves a dialogue inside it: about latent, invented images; about the ways of resisting and navigating the darkness. UNA SOMBRA OSCILANTE explores how the intimate and political weight of images can open spaces to reflect upon them as acts of resistance, either because they are made despite the horror of their context or because they offer an imaginary vanishing point that might just set us free.

In that atmosphere of secrecy, woven from games and shadows, a group of children is surprised by an extraterrestrial visit. Sinopsis:
Un grupo de arqueólogos excava el patio de la casa de Ingrid Olderock, la mujer más poderosa de la policía secreta de Pinochet. El archivo de la torturadora emerge y la voz distante de una joven narradora traza no sólo su recorrido, sino también el de los espacios en los que instruyó a las demás mujeres que ejercieron el horror. La narradora, ligada involuntariamente con la misma Olderock, encarnará múltiples voces y personajes, escabulléndose en la propia película y subvirtiendo las lógicas del horror. 
Un film hecho de documentos de lo real y de exploraciones imaginativas como formas de resistencia.

Synopsis:

A group of archaeologists digs up the yard of Ingrid Olderock’s house, the most powerful woman in Pinochet’s secret police.
The torturer's archive emerges and traces not only her path, but those of the spaces where she trained the women who carried the violence. The narrator, involuntarily connected to Olderock herself, embodies multiple voices and characters, slipping into the film and subverting the very logic of horror. A film made of documents of the real and imaginative explorations as forms of resistance.

GOBIERNO VASCO
ENCUMBRO es un proyecto polimorfo de carácter experimental que explora el juego
mediante una observación y escucha particular de la práctica de encumbrar volantines en el
cielo. El material de origen corresponde a una serie de registros visuales, fílmicos y sonoros
registrados en 2021 en las regiones Metropolitana y Valparaíso. La instalación fílmica se
materializa a partir de un trabajo de investigación en procesos analógicos de copiado
fotoquímico y la fabricación de loops de 16mm y Super8 que se despliegan y proyectan en
el espacio. La pieza sonora es desarrollada a partir de sistemas de vibración que transducen
el registro del viento por medio de hilos tensados, atravesando la sala.


ENCUMBRO is an experimental polymorphic project that explores the sense of play through a particular observation and listening of the practice of flying kites in the sky.&#38;nbsp; The original material corresponds to a series of visual, film and sound recordings made in 2021 in the Metropolitan and Valparaíso regions of Chile. The film installation is materialized from a research work in analogical processes of photochemical copying and the fabrication of 16mm and Super8 loops that are displayed and projected in space. The sound piece is based on vibration systems that transduce the register of the wind by tensioned wires, crossing the room.

"Así como el Río de la Plata, con su color de león y su anchura excepcional, perdió su inocencia cuando se tragó a miles de desaparecidos, el desierto de Atacama ⎼el más árido del mundo, dueño de cielos inmensos y estrellados, motivo de orgullo nacional por esta notoria singularidad (“inflen el pecho de orgullo” reza un fragmento del texto poético en una de las videoinstalaciones)⎼ carga con la misma irrecusable paradoja: la de conjugar belleza y horror, una intensa y contradictoria connotación identitaria, amasada al calor de manuales escolares, tradiciones populares y canciones patrias, que la obra de Celeste interroga con la fuerza crítica de una mirada que se resiste a la pasividad del recuerdo.”

En el año 2011 una mujer, miembro de una agrupación de familiares de ejecutados políticos en Calama, Chile, recibió un sobre anónimo con la imagen de un enorme cuchillo corvo trazado sobre el Desierto de Atacama. A cada costado de la empuñadura se habían trazado y petrificado los números 73 y 78, y un círculo perfecto de aproximadamente 600 metros de diámetro.

El corvo es un emblema histórico de las Fuerzas Armadas en la región: fue adoptado por el ejército chileno en la Guerra del Pacífico, a fines del siglo XIX, y durante la más reciente dictadura cívico-militar, el arma fue empleada para la ejecución de miles de personas en el marco de una política sistemática de exterminio y desaparición.

El dibujo contiene referencias que parecieran señalar el año del Golpe de Estado y del plan de ejecución y desaparición forzada “Caravana de la muerte”, como también la fecha de la operación “Retiro de televisores”, otro plan nacional de desaparición, encomendado por Augusto Pinochet a los regimientos del país a través de un mensaje encriptado, con el objetivo de remover los cuerpos de miles de ejecutados políticos y lanzarlos hacia lo profundo del mar.


Ejercicios de aridez es un proyecto polimorfo desarrollado entre 2017 y 2021 por la artista Celeste Rojas Mugica, quien acudiendo al sitio donde se encuentra esta inasible imagen, fija su atención sobre un enigma del cual no se conoce autoría.

Un corvo permanece incrustado en la tierra más seca del mundo.


In 2011, a woman part of an organization created by relatives of executed political prisoners in Calama, Chile, received an anonymous envelope which contained a photograph of a large corvo knife drawn over the Atacama Desert. On either side of the knife's hilt were traced and petrified the numbers 73 and 78 and a perfect circle of approximately 600 meters in diameter.

The "corvo" was adopted by the Chilean Army in the Pacific War at the end of the 19th century and during the most recent dictatorship the weapon was used for the execution of thousands of people as part of a systematic policy of extermination and disappearance.

The drawing contains signs that seem to refer to the year of the coup d’état and the "Caravana de la Muerte" (Caravan of Death) operation, a plan of execution and forced disappearance, as well as the date of the "Retiro de televisores" operation (Withdrawal of televisions), a plan of disappearance with the objective of removing bodies of thousands of political prisoners, throwing them into the depths of the sea.&#38;nbsp;
Ejercicios de aridez (Aridity Exercises) is a project developed between 2017 and 2021 by artist Celeste Rojas Mugica, whom visiting the site where this&#38;nbsp; image is found, focuses her attention on an enigma whose authorship is unknown.

A corvo knife remains incrusted in the driest place on earth.
